Jerry Johnson Hotsprings, are free and wild and located in the Clearwater National Forest, in Northern Idaho. They are an easy one mile walk from the warm springs trail head on scenic highway US 12.
They were beautiful, hot, clean pools that we were lucky enough to get to ourselves … all except for the last meadow hot spring. We had already spent four hours in the first two pools though, we were hot springed out. Out of curiosity, I approached it, and the 3 people in there called out “Come in come in, come and join us!” They had a beautiful fire going, lovely views and there would have been plenty of room for all of us.
We camped at Jerry Johnston Campground for $14 per night. Yes, the hot springs are free and we could have found free camping too, but lets not pretend this is all free when we spent $120 on gas from Bozeman just getting there.
Northern Idaho is stunning. Visit in the off season and you will be spoilt rotten by excellent camping, views and hikes. We saw moose and deer all along the highway in the evening, and the autumn trees lining the river were very pretty.
